Canyonlands is Utah's largest national park. The Green and Colorado rivers split the park into three major districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles and The Maze.
These areas all have a primitive desert atmosphere, but each offers different opportunities for sightseeing and adventure.
Canyonlands is a remote area with few services. Tourists going on a hike must be sure to bring everything they need.

The Needles was named for the colorful spires of Cedar Mesa Sandstone that dominate the area.

Did you know that southeast Utah is bear country? Black bears are known to wander into the park from the Abajo Mountains, which border The Needles district.
Mammals that roam this park include black bears, coyotes, skunks, bats, elk, foxes, bobcats, badgers, two species of ring-tailed cats, pronghorns, and cougars. Match the vocabulary with these pictures. If you don't know the vocabulary, click the word and you will be taken to wikipedia for information and a photo.
At least 273 species of birds inhabit the park.
Several reptiles can be found, including eleven species of lizards and eight species of snake.
My best,
Jane
