Day 13 (D-48) Georgia O'Keeffe

Day 13  Georgia O'Keeffe
Yesterday, Willa Cather, the writer.  Today, Georgia O'Keeffe, the artist.  What a good day, May 1st*, to present Georgia O'Keeffe.

Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was an American artist. She was best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes.  O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism" and in the United States she is as famous as the abstract artist, Jackson Pollock.

We here in Grenoble were very lucky to see some of her paintings at the Musée de Grenoble during the exhibition "Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Photographer Friends "(07/11/2015 to 07/02/2016). I'm certain that my students remember our visit there, with our English-speaking guide.
For many of my students this article is a little too long and difficult, but it's interesting to see an article written in English about Grenoble's O'Keeffe exhibition.

Georgia O'Keeffe's work is something for your eyes.  But let's do this with your ears too.  Here's a good easy biography in English I found on youtube.  I hope you can  find 4 minutes to watch (for the pleasure of your eyes) and listen (for your English comprehension).   Remember you can slow down the speed of the recording.  Click the wheel, change "vitesse" from "normale " to 0.75.  There are subtitles.

However, this one is without subtitles, but only 2 minutes and you can hear Georgia O'Keeffe:

You choose, one or the other, or another one you find on youtube...or none at all! 😞  Or a short biography to read here, if you prefer: https://www.biography.com/artist/georgia-okeeffe

And if you have lots of time, BBC made a documentary film in 2016. Very interesting.

*At the beginning of the 20th century, it became tradition in France to sell lily of the valley on international Labour Day,  May 1st  (also called La Fête du Muguet (Lily of the Valley Day) by labour organisations and private persons without paying sales tax (on that day only) as a symbol of spring.
