Day 52 (D-9) The Heard Museum / (World Hoop Dance 2019 Contest at the Heard Museum)

The Heard Museum is a private, not-for-profit museum located in Phoenix, dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum presents the stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective, as well as exhibitions of traditional and contemporary art by American Indian artists and artists influenced by American Indian art. The Heard Museum collaborates with American Indian artists and tribal communities on providing visitors with a distinctive perspective about the art of Native people, especially those from the Southwest.

Do you remember reading about the Arizona politician Barry Goldwater on Day 50?  Do you remember reading about Kachina dolls on Day 45 ?
Barry Goldwater gave his collection of 437 Kachina dolls to the museum.  We will be able to see them there.

Would you like to take a quick two-minute visit to the Heard Museum?  I promise you'll have no difficulties understanding this short video.

And here you have the World Hoop Dance 2019 Contest which took place at the Heard Museum in February. Native Americans present this contest.  Sorry, no subtitles, but you can slow down the recording (paramètres). And you can watch the dances, see the costumes and listen to the music too!  -->

World Hoop Dance 2019 at Heard Museum
Hoop dancing is a long-standing tradition in many Native cultures. This unique dance can involve the use of more than 50 hoops. Passed down from one generation to the next, hoop dancing communicates individual and tribal stories using hoops to create symbols and depict animals of great meaning in Native communities. The continuous circle of the hoops symbolizes the circle of life and the continual changing of the seasons.

Traditional hoops were made from the wood of a willow tree. Modern-day hoops are often made from reed and plastic hose because of the durability of the material when traveling. The hoops are decorated with tape and paint to symbolize the changing colors of each season. The traditional wooden hoops are still used on rare occasions.

My best,
Jane
